Leading from the start... Narrowly lost to Basarashkina in the shoot-off
Kim Min-jeong (24, KB Kookmin Bank) of the women's shooting team won the silver medal in the 25m pistol event. This is the first medal for the shooting team in this competition.
On the 30th, Kim Min-jeong ranked 2nd in the women's 25m pistol final at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics held at the Asaka Shooting Range in Tokyo, Japan. She scored 38 points up to the 50 rapid-fire shots, sharing the lead, but lost 4-1 in the shoot-off to Russia's Vitalina Batsarashkina. In the pistol final, a shot scoring 10.2 points or higher earns 1 point, while a shot below 10.2 points earns 0 points.
Kim Min-jeong showed excellent form from the start and approached the medal zone. She scored the highest 14 points up to the fifteenth shot, leading second-place Batsarashkina by 4 points. However, in the following ten shots, she only scored 4 points, allowing Batsarashkina to catch up with 7 points. Kim Min-jeong consistently scored 4 points per shot afterward, maintaining the lead. But Batsarashkina hit all of her last five shots, forcing a shoot-off, where Kim's concentration faltered at the end, narrowly missing the gold medal.
Earlier, Kim Min-jeong passed the preliminary round in 8th place. She scored 291 points (9th place) in the qualification round the previous day and shot 293 points in the rapid-fire round on the day. With a total of 584 points (an average of 9.733 points), she improved her ranking by one step and barely advanced to the final. With a different performance from the preliminaries, she brought the first medal to the shooting team in this competition.
