Jeju Police Special Crackdown on Fraud Crimes... 221 Arrested, 21 Detained

[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] Jeju Police Agency (Chief Kang Hwangsu) announced on the 30th that it conducted a special crackdown on fraud crimes (telephone finance, cyber, employment, jeonse, insurance fraud) in the first half of this year, arresting 221 people in 430 cases, of whom 21 were detained.

During the special crackdown period in the first half of the year, the criminal team was deployed to tackle the recently rampant face-to-face extortion type telephone finance fraud, focusing on rapid investigation of victims and witnesses and CCTV video analysis to make on-site arrests. As a result, 90 telephone finance fraudsters were arrested, and 15 were detained.

Centered on the Crime Proceeds Tracking Investigation Team newly established in February, efforts to trace and recover damages resulted in the confiscation, seizure, and recovery of approximately 3.03 billion KRW in criminal proceeds from 11 cases.

In cooperation with related organizations such as the Financial Supervisory Service, financial institutions, and Jeju Provincial Government, various online and offline prevention and publicity activities have been carried out, and compensation has been actively provided to citizens who prevented crime damage, making every effort to prevent victimization.

Major arrest cases include the arrest and detention of a suspect who posted false sales posts on ‘Junggonara’ and defrauded 22 victims of a total of about 14 million KRW.

Also, a suspect who defrauded about 14 million KRW from 13 victims by pretending to sell Cheonhyehyang, rent cars, and make lodging reservations targeting tourists, thereby damaging Jeju’s tourism image, was arrested and detained.

Chief Kang Hwangsu said, “In the second half of the year, from next month 1st to October 31st, we will operate a special crackdown period on fraud crimes, and we will do our best to prevent and arrest so that ordinary people who are economically struggling due to COVID-19 do not suffer double pain from fraud damage.”
