Seoul City Holds Urban Planning Committee Meeting to Revise District Unit Plan Around Itaewon-ro
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyemin] Itaewon-ro in Yongsan-gu, Seoul will revitalize the pedestrian street in connection with Yongsan Park. Low-rise commercial buildings will be maintained along the street to secure the view of Yongsan Park.
On the 28th, Seoul City held the 13th Urban and Architectural Joint Committee and announced on the 29th that it had reorganized the district unit plan around Itaewon-ro accordingly.
The area in question is the vicinity of Itaewon Station between Noksapyeong Station, Itaewon Station, and Hangangjin Station on Subway Line 6. To the west is Yongsan Park, to the south is the Hannam Redevelopment Promotion District, and it is a specialized street densely packed with shops and restaurants such as Quynon Street and the World Food Culture Street, where various exotic cultures coexist.
Through this reorganization, the city prepared a management plan for the areas restored due to the partial cancellation of the adjacent Hannam Redevelopment Promotion District and the additionally incorporated areas since the district unit plan was decided in 2012. These areas will minimize excessive lot planning to enable autonomous joint development.
In addition, building guidelines were established to secure the view of Yongsan Park located on the east side of Noksapyeong-daero. Low-rise commercial buildings will be maintained on the specialized street, and the standards for installing auxiliary parking lots have been relaxed to improve the pedestrian environment.
A Seoul city official stated, "Through this reorganization, we plan to maintain the unique regional characteristics of Itaewon while improving the street landscape and revitalizing the pedestrian street in connection with the future Yongsan Park. We expect it to play a role as a vibrant tourist district."
