Won Hee-ryong: "Lee Jae-myung's Strength Is Telling Wrong Stories with a Straight Face"

Won Hee-ryong: "Lee Jae-myung's Strength Is Telling Wrong Stories with a Straight Face" People Power Party presidential candidate and Jeju Governor Won Hee-ryong is being interviewed by Yonhap News Agency at the Jeju Provincial Government Seoul Office in Yeouido, Seoul, on the 27th.

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Choyoung] Won Heeryong, governor of Jeju and a presidential candidate from the People Power Party, criticized Lee Jae-myung, governor of Gyeonggi Province, who is debating basic income with former lawmaker Yoo Seung-min, saying, "His strength is confidently making incorrect statements."

On the 28th, Won wrote on his Twitter, "I read that former lawmaker Yoo and Governor Lee are debating basic income and carbon tax on Facebook," and added, "Ordinary people feel embarrassed when they say inconsistent things, but Governor Lee speaks with increasing confidence."

He pointed out, "Governor Lee claimed that combining basic income with land tax would suppress real estate speculation and recover unearned income," adding, "All experts opposed the attempt to recover real estate prices through taxation, but the Roh Moo-hyun and Moon Jae-in administrations pushed it through, which all led to skyrocketing real estate prices. However, Governor Lee has learned no lessons from these failures."

He continued, "The only part of Governor Lee's argument I agree with is that 'if real estate prices stabilize by just 5%, it would result in tens of trillions of won in housing subsidy effects,'" and criticized, "Therefore, the Moon Jae-in administration, which caused a 50% surge in real estate prices, effectively imposed housing penalties amounting to hundreds of trillions of won, and Governor Lee's policies, which follow the same logic, are no different."

Won concluded, expressing skepticism about whether Governor Lee will maintain his basic income policy, saying, "If Governor Lee does not maintain the basic income policy, it damages trust; if he does, then there is a problem with his judgment."
