[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Suhwan] Amid the semiconductor supply shortage causing global automobile manufacturers to face production and supply issues, the impact of the shortage is reportedly affecting even U.S. iPhone maker Apple and electric vehicle company Tesla.

On the 28th (local time), The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported, "Even companies like Apple and Tesla, which have been regarded as having secured stable supply chains, are unlikely to escape the effects of the semiconductor shortage."

Although Apple and Tesla recorded record-breaking earnings in the second quarter, concerns are rising that the semiconductor shortage will slow the growth of these companies in the future.

Apple stated in its second-quarter earnings announcement the previous day that the semiconductor shortage is expected to negatively impact future sales of iPhones and iPads. Luca Maestri, Apple’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO), said, "Due to semiconductor supply issues, Apple’s growth rate in the third quarter is expected to shrink compared to the 36% growth recorded in the second quarter."

Apple has been securing dedicated iPhone production lines by paying premiums to semiconductor manufacturers and signing contracts years in advance, which has been credited with contributing to supply chain stability.

However, recent semiconductor supply shortages are expected to diminish the effectiveness of Apple’s efforts.

Patrick Moorhead, CEO of market research firm Moor Insights & Strategy, said, "Apple appears to have sold most of its iPhone inventory in the second quarter, including some inventory scheduled for shipment in the third quarter," adding, "Apple may face iPhone supply issues through the fourth quarter of this year."

Elon Musk, Tesla’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), also mentioned in the earnings announcement on the 26th that the semiconductor shortage could delay the production schedule of the pickup truck model ‘Cybertruck,’ which was planned to start production this year.
