[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Jong-hwa] Noroo Paint announced on the 29th that its 'Energy Saver Cool Road,' the industry's first developed and the number one product in domestic heat-reflective coating construction performance, has recently been selected as the heat-reflective road paving product for Seongdong-gu and Songpa-gu in Seoul, with construction scheduled to begin between August and September.
As road heat-reflective paint is recognized as one of the solutions to lower surface temperatures of roads during summer, local governments are increasingly including 'heat-reflective functions' in construction specifications to reduce urban heat island effects, steadily increasing demand.
The urban heat island effect refers to the phenomenon where urban areas have temperatures about 2 to 5℃ higher than suburban areas due to artificial heat and air pollution within cities. When daytime temperatures exceed 30℃ in summer, the surface temperature of regular asphalt roads can reach up to 80℃.
Unlike regular asphalt that absorbs solar heat directly, Energy Saver Cool Road is a special paint with heat-reflective properties, consisting of two types: one for 'automobile roads' and another for 'bicycle and light pedestrian roads.' Unlike conventional asphalt paving, this paint increases solar reflectance, reflecting radiation heat received during the day and reducing ground heat emission. Compared to newly paved asphalt roads, it can lower surface temperatures by more than 10℃.
Energy Saver Cool Road is composed of MMA resin, infrared reflective materials, and special pigments, and holds related patents. It is a solvent-free type that does not require solvents, allowing drying within one hour after application, minimizing vehicle control. It offers excellent durability and adhesion on road surfaces, as well as high slip resistance, providing various benefits. The product has obtained environmental label certification, making construction and maintenance costs reasonable.
Noroo Paint had already developed heat-reflective and insulation technologies independently in 2010 when market demand was minimal, possessing core technologies such as binder synthesis, dispersion of insulation fillers, durability improvement, and appearance control technology.
With the worsening of abnormal climate phenomena worldwide, Noroo Paint anticipated that these would exacerbate weather disasters and focused on developing technologies to address these issues. Through this, they have developed products applicable to various materials such as roads, glass, and building rooftops, expanding the market.
Since 2016, the product has been actively applied in pilot projects on Daehak-ro in Seoul, Hongje Station, Dobong-gu, and Seosomun roads, and through construction on major roads and city halls in local governments nationwide including Busan, Gwangju, Gimhae, Chungju, Geoje, and Ansan, demonstrating overwhelming performance as the number one domestic heat-reflective coating in construction achievements.
A Noroo Paint official stated, "As domestic goals for greenhouse gas reduction increase and local governments' interest in climate change grows, demand for road heat-reflective paint continues to rise beyond the quantities used by public institutions. As it is expected to be an alternative to alleviate urban heat island effects and tropical nights, we will further upgrade our technology and lead the heat-reflective paint market."
