On the 28th, NHK reported that a total of 9,576 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed across Japan. This is the first time daily cases nationwide have exceeded 9,000.
Additionally, there were a total of 8 deaths due to COVID-19, including 6 in Tokyo and 2 in Aichi Prefecture. This brings the cumulative number of infections to 893,340, including 892,628 domestic cases (including airport quarantine) and 712 cruise ship passengers and crew. The cumulative death toll also rose to 15,174, including 15,161 domestic deaths and 13 deaths among cruise ship passengers.
The number of new cases by local government was as follows: Tokyo 3,177, Kanagawa Prefecture 1,051, Saitama Prefecture 870, Osaka Prefecture 798, Chiba Prefecture 577, Fukuoka Prefecture 405, Okinawa Prefecture 347, Aichi Prefecture 265, Hyogo Prefecture 254, Ibaraki Prefecture 194, Kyoto Prefecture 175, Shizuoka Prefecture 120, Ishikawa Prefecture 119, Tochigi Prefecture 102, among others. Additionally, 7 cases were confirmed at quarantine stations such as airports.
According to Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, the number of severe COVID-19 patients on ventilators or receiving treatment in intensive care units was 522 as of this day, an increase of 8 from the previous day.
