[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] Corrective measures, including fines, were imposed on seven businesses that violated personal information protection regulations by collecting resident registration numbers without legal grounds.
The Personal Information Protection Commission held its 13th plenary session on the 28th and decided on corrective measures such as imposing a total fine of 17 million KRW and issuing correction orders to seven businesses.
Based on a preliminary investigation by the Korea Internet & Security Agency regarding public interest reports, the Personal Information Protection Commission conducted additional fact verification and legal review and confirmed the following violations.
Middle School A collected resident registration numbers based on the education office's work manual without legal grounds while processing transfer tasks for enrolled students. Water purifier rental business B refused a user's (data subject's) request to withdraw consent for marketing use.
The Apartment Residents' Representative Meeting C did not promptly destroy posts containing candidates' personal information related to the residents' representative election even after the election ended and the purpose of collecting personal information was achieved. Other violations included failure to disclose outsourced personal information processing tasks and collection of personal video information without the data subject's consent.
The Personal Information Protection Commission imposed fines on five businesses that violated obligations such as disclosure of outsourced tasks and destruction of personal information. Additionally, Middle School A, which collected resident registration numbers without legal grounds, received a correction recommendation, while business B, which did not suspend personal information processing, and convenience store D, which inadequately installed CCTV notice boards, were issued correction orders.
Song Sang-hoon, Director of the Investigation and Coordination Bureau at the Personal Information Protection Commission, stated, "We hope this case will enhance understanding of the personal information processing process and serve as an opportunity to make personal information protection a part of daily life."
