[Wando=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Kyungpil] Wando-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Shin Woo-cheol) announced on the 28th that it will officially implement the ferry fare support project for island residents at 1,000 won (hereinafter referred to as the ‘1,000 won fare system’) starting from the 1st of next month.
Since 2006 until now, island residents using ferry fares below 8,340 won have only had to pay 50% of the fare to use the ferry.
This section is a living area within one hour, with a usage rate of 75% by island residents.
The ferry, the only means of transportation to and from islands not connected by land, was included in the Public Transportation Act last year, but island residents still bear a much higher cost compared to mainland residents when using the ferry.
With the implementation of the 1,000 won fare system, island residents can use the ferry by paying only ‘1,000 won’ regardless of the sailing distance.
A county official stated, “It is expected to alleviate the transportation cost burden of island residents using the ferry and contribute to improving the quality of life of residents by enhancing convenience in maritime transportation.”
