Attempted Sexual Assault of a Woman in Her 70s Three Months After Release... 50s Man Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Ju Cheol-in] A man in his 50s who was prosecuted for attempting to sexually assault a woman in her 70s by breaking into her house just three months after his release was sentenced to prison.

On the 28th, the 1st Criminal Division of the Pohang Branch of Daegu District Court (Chief Judge Kwon Sun-hyang) announced that A (56), who was charged with trespassing and rape, was sentenced to 5 years in prison, ordered to complete 80 hours of a sexual violence treatment program, and banned from working at child and youth-related institutions and welfare facilities for the disabled for 5 years.

A reportedly visited B (76), whose house is located in Buk-gu, Pohang-si, Gyeongbuk, at around 7 p.m. on February 15. When the door was locked, he climbed over the wall to break in. He then attempted to sexually assault B but fled after hearing that the police would be called. He was prosecuted for violating the Special Act on the Punishment of Sexual Crimes.

The court stated, "The victim appears to have suffered significant mental shock and distress from this incident, and A has not been forgiven by the victim," adding, "He committed the crime during the recidivism period, less than three months after being released from prison for extortion, without showing remorse."

However, the court explained the sentencing by considering "the fact that the crime was only attempted and that there is no prior criminal record for similar offenses."
