Gwangyang Jangdo Transmission Education Center, Continuing the Tradition for 3 Generations
[Gwangyang=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seonsik] The public event hosted by Park Jonggun, holder of National Intangible Cultural Property No. 60 Jangdojang (traditional Korean ornamental knife craftsman) (subtitle: Continuing the Tradition Across Three Generations) announced on the 27th that it will open the Jangdo viewing and Jangdo making demonstration at the Jeonnam Gwangyang Jangdo Transmission Education Center.
Sponsored by the Cultural Heritage Administration's National Intangible Heritage Center and the Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation, and hosted by Park Jonggun, holder of National Intangible Cultural Property No. 60 Jangdojang, this event aims to preserve and pass down the original techniques of Jangdo craftsmanship, correct the misconceptions about 'Jangdo,' provide accurate information to citizens, and widely promote the noble spirit and soul of our ancestors embodied in Jangdo.
During this public event, the doors of the workshop, which are usually closed to the public, will be opened to reveal the Jangdo making workshop, the process of making Jangdo using various tools, and over 20 works including the 2021 new piece ‘Silver Inlaid Dragon Bamboo Jangdo’.
Park Jonggun, who continues the tradition of Gwangyang Jangdo (粧刀) across generations, has inherited the Jangdo making techniques from the first generation Doam Park Yonggi to the third generation. Especially during the event period, visitors can appreciate the completed Jangdo pieces that have evolved through generations.
The public event will be held from July 31 to August 2 (3 days), with sessions at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily.
Director Park Jonggun, who is organizing the event, said, “Along with the meaning of Jangdo, which signifies unwavering single-minded devotion (Ilpyeonsim), I hope people will feel the traditional intangible cultural heritage techniques on site and enjoy the beautiful Jangdo artworks,” and added, “We ask for the interest and participation of citizens.”
Tak Younghee, head of the Culture and Arts Division, said, “This event, where you can directly experience our unique traditional techniques on site, is a great opportunity to reflect on the hidden meanings and values of the Jangdo spirit, which embodies the spiritual culture of our ancestors.”
