On the 27th, President Moon stated through a social network service (SNS) message, "The Korean Tidal Flats have been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. This is very joyful news."
According to the Cultural Heritage Administration on the 26th, the 44th World Heritage Committee made the final decision to inscribe the Korean Tidal Flats on the World Heritage List. This is the second natural heritage site after the "Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes" in 2007.
President Moon said, "This is the result of the joint efforts of the registration promotion team and related ministries to actively promote and persuade the valuable significance of our tidal flats," adding, "Now, our country has fifteen World Heritage sites."
He also mentioned that the main reason for the World Heritage inscription was the recognition of its value as "an important habitat for the conservation of biodiversity on Earth," noting that the tidal flats are a crucial area for the survival of endangered waterbirds such as the Far Eastern Curlew.
President Moon expressed gratitude for "the affection and interest of local residents who have preserved the tidal flats as their living environment," and stated, "The government will cooperate with local governments to preserve the tidal flat ecosystem, promote community development, and do its utmost to support it so that it becomes a precious World Heritage site shared by people worldwide."
