Condolence Payments for Deaths and Injuries, Housing Repair Costs Used for Residents' Livelihood Stability
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Seoul City will urgently provide 400 million KRW from the External Cooperation Fund on the 27th to support disaster recovery in the southern regions such as Jeonnam and Gyeongnam, which suffered significant damage due to the heavy rain from the 5th to the 8th.
The External Cooperation Fund will be delivered to the National Disaster Relief Association, the distribution agency for relief funds under the Disaster Relief Act, to enable rapid disaster recovery in areas severely affected by the sudden heavy rain in addition to the spread of COVID-19. The funds will be used for restoring damaged facilities and stabilizing the livelihoods of disaster victims.
The fund will be used to help residents whose livelihoods were threatened by the heavy rain, including those who suffered deaths or injuries, housing damage, and flooding of farmland and livestock facilities, to return to their daily lives as soon as possible.
Seoul City annually allocates the External Cooperation Fund to provide relief in case of emergency disaster situations in other local governments and continuously supports other local governments affected by disasters and calamities.
Last year, 1.25 billion KRW was provided to support COVID-19 recovery in Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions and flood damage relief in Gangwon, Chungbuk, Chungnam, Gwangju, Jeonnam, Jeonbuk, and Gyeongnam regions. In 2019, 490 million KRW was provided for wildfire recovery in Gangwon and typhoon damage recovery in Gyeongbuk, Gangwon, Busan, and Jeju regions.
Kim Eui-seung, Director of Planning and Coordination at Seoul City, said, "In these difficult times with COVID-19, we want to provide emergency support to residents in regions facing the crisis of losing their homes due to sudden flood damage," adding, "We hope Seoul City's support will be of some help to the residents of Jeonnam and Gyeongnam who are suffering."
Meanwhile, Seoul City signed friendship exchange agreements with Jeollanam-do in 2004 and with Gyeongsangnam-do in 2009 and 2018, promoting exchange projects in various fields such as economy, culture, tourism, and youth.
