[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Dong-guk] Sangju City in Gyeongbuk is actively advancing a livestock odor improvement project to harmonize livestock farming with the environment.
Since 2020, Sangju City has been promoting the 'Livestock-Agriculture Circulation Activation' project, which aims to improve livestock odors and utilize livestock by-products such as manure as agricultural resources.
Having established one village-type compost resource facility and two specialized compost distribution organizations, Sangju City will spread approximately 3,000 tons of livestock manure compost produced here from the 26th until the end of the year over about 150 hectares of cultivated land for garlic and forage crops in the Hamchang-eup area.
The compost spreading is carried out after testing the degree of compost maturity and verifying soil conditions for each cultivated area, issuing fertilization prescriptions to reduce environmental pollution while enhancing soil fertility and supplying trace elements, thereby creating high-quality farmland.
In 2021, Sangju City implemented a livestock odor reduction project with a budget of 3.87 billion KRW to support individual odor reduction treatment facilities for each livestock farm. In 2022, with a budget of 1.829 billion KRW for the livestock odor improvement project, the city plans to support individual treatment facilities for livestock farms to activate livestock-agriculture circulation.
Mayor Kang Young-seok of Sangju said, "Through collaboration among Sangju City, livestock farms, crop farms, and residents, livestock manure has been composted to eliminate odors and reduce farmers' fertilizer purchase costs." He added, "We hope this project will continue to be well implemented, improving residents' quality of life and laying the foundation for sustainable development of agriculture and livestock farming."
