[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] The Ministry of Unification stated that the recent oral letter of condolence sent by Kim Jong-un, General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea, to Xi Jinping, President of China, regarding flood damage is "part of the exchanges between the North Korean and Chinese leaders."
Lee Jong-joo, spokesperson for the Ministry of Unification, said at a regular briefing on the 26th, "There has been a precedent of exchanging letters of condolence between the North Korean and Chinese leaders on occasions such as high-level personnel exchanges, major anniversaries, and the occurrence of disasters," responding accordingly.
According to the Ministry of Unification, since Kim Jong-un took power, the North Korean and Chinese leaders have exchanged a total of nine letters of condolence, including the recent letter regarding flood damage in China.
Regarding North Korea's food situation amid the heatwave, the spokesperson said, "North Korea has recently been publicly sharing various efforts to prepare for abnormal weather disasters such as heatwaves and droughts through various media," adding, "The government is also closely monitoring the overall food situation, including North Korea's grain production."
