From the 12th to the 21st, a 10-day period of continuous 'heatwave'
Sales of cooling appliances, water play products, and shaved ice items greatly increased
[Asia Economy Reporter Yuri Kim] Market Kurly announced on the 26th that during the 10 days from the 12th to the 21st, when the heatwave continued, sales of summer-related products such as cooling appliances, water play products, and shaved ice items that help beat the heat significantly increased.
Since the 12th, temperatures have soared above 30 degrees Celsius daily, and heatwave warnings have been issued for most regions nationwide, intensifying the heat. Market Kurly reported that sales of cooling appliances from the 12th to the 21st increased by 75% compared to the previous same period from the 2nd to the 11th. Among cooling appliances, the product with the highest sales increase was the 'Paseco' window-type air conditioner, with orders surging by 472%. Market Kurly analyzed that the increase in sales is due to the convenience of the window-type air conditioner, which unlike regular air conditioners, does not require scheduling a separate installation day and can be delivered the next day and installed directly by the customer. Sales of circulator products, which can enhance cooling power when used together with air conditioners, also increased by 79%.
Along with the hot weather, the resurgence of COVID-19 has led to a significant increase in sales of water play products for children who have to spend their vacations at home. Sales of portable pools that allow water play indoors on balconies or living rooms increased by 204%. The 'Intex' Family Frame Pool, with ample space measuring 220cm in width, 150cm in length, and 60cm in height, where children can play comfortably, showed the highest sales. Following that was the 'Bestway' embossed square pool for infants, which is also suitable for bathing. Sales of water play accessories such as arm rings, tubes, and water guns also increased by 36%.
Shaved ice is popular as a dessert to cool down from the heat. Compared to the 10 days from the 2nd to the 11th before the heatwave started, sales of shaved ice items from the 12th to the 21st increased by 70%. Sales of ice crushers and shaved ice machines increased by 71%, and sales of toppings eaten with shaved ice such as sweet red beans, injeolmi (rice cake), dalgona (Korean honeycomb toffee), and mango dice also rose by 73%. Sales of ice block products, which can be frozen with various ingredients like yogurt, mango, green tea, and chocolate and then simply crushed in a shaved ice machine, increased by about 40%.
Starting this week, as the peak vacation season begins, it is expected that more people will prepare to escape the heat. Market Kurly is holding a vacation special event until August 5th. Vacation-related products such as water play items and sun care products are offered at up to 50% discount, along with a coupon benefit of 10% off (up to 3,000 KRW) for payments over 25,000 KRW made via KakaoPay.
