On the 21st of last month, he declared his candidacy for the Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education Superintendent election, then three days later expressed his intention not to run, and now about a month later, he has reversed that decision.
At the time of expressing his intention not to run, Principal Kim released a statement saying he gave up his intention to run for superintendent to keep his promise to the children as a recruited principal.
In the statement, he said, "How can I become the leader of the educational family responsible for 200,000 children when I cannot even keep my promise to the 25 children of a small school?"
The strong support from parents seems to be a major reason behind Principal Kim's official decision to run again in the superintendent election.
He said, "I have decided to run again for the superintendent election because the parents of Deukryang Elementary School and those around me strongly encouraged me to run. I plan to submit my resignation in February next year and run in the election."
He added, "There are concerns that the timing of submitting the resignation is too late to prepare for the election, but I believe there will be no problems with the election campaign. I apologize for the frequent reversals of my candidacy and will do my best not to disappoint."
He cited his age as his greatest strength.
He said, "The superintendent position also needs generational change. Compared to other candidates, I am younger and have a differentiated fresh perspective, which I consider my strength. I will leverage this differentiated strength to lead integration and create balanced education with inclusive and integrative leadership."
He also stated, "The position of superintendent is not a place to only listen to what one wants to hear or meet only those one wants to meet. I will be a superintendent who communicates, not one who divides and is uncommunicative."
Furthermore, he said, "Only someone who looks solely at the children of Jeonnam and has a philosophy and leadership of mutual help and cooperation for the proper growth of students should become superintendent. I will respect and take good care of the educational family that has been tired and exhausted by division over the past three years."
Meanwhile, Principal Kim Dong-hwan, born in 1970, graduated from Seoul National University of Education, Korea National University of Education Graduate School, and the University of Wisconsin Graduate School in the United States. He has served as a supervisor at the Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education, vice principal of Dogok Elementary and Dongbok Elementary Schools, and president of the Jeonnam Elementary School (Principal) Association.
Next year's Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education Superintendent election has become a fait accompli with Superintendent Jang Seok-woong and former Superintendent Secretary Kim Dae-jung's candidacies, and former Hampyeong Education Director Kim Seung-ho is also expected to hold an inauguration ceremony around September to October.
