66 Shade Shelter Chairs Installed for Pedestrians with Mobility Challenges to Sit and Rest
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon) is operating a total of 108 shade shelters by installing 19 additional crosswalk shade shelters to prevent heatwave damage to residents during the summer.
This year, the district installed additional crosswalk shade shelters at 19 locations, including five crosswalks around Gangdong Riverst Complexes 4, 6, 7, and 8, where about 4,400 households have moved in, as well as ▲around large apartment complexes in Godeok-dong (5), ▲in front of Sangil-dong Station (2), ▲the intersection in front of Seonsa Elementary School (4), ▲Amsa Water Purification Center intersection, ▲in front of Jjukkumi Alley in Seongnae-dong, and ▲the back gate of Amsa-dong Lotte Castle First.
In particular, for locations where the sidewalk width was narrow and installing shade shelters was difficult, a plan was devised to produce small-sized shade shelters tailored to the sidewalk width. The district plans to continuously identify urgent locations for installation, focusing on crosswalks along roads with heavy foot traffic and no shade, and install shade shelters accordingly.
Additionally, chairs were installed at 66 shade shelter locations so that vulnerable pedestrians such as the elderly, disabled, and pregnant women can sit and rest in the shade. The shade shelter chairs are made of wooden materials that harmonize with the urban landscape and are attached to the shade shelter pillars in a foldable form to avoid inconvenience to pedestrians.
Lee Jeong-hoon, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, stated, “As the record-breaking heatwave continues, we plan to continuously expand the installation of shade shelters and chairs so that residents can spend the summer safely and comfortably. We will do our best to help residents, who are exhausted from COVID-19, have a healthy summer.”
