CU is providing over 15,000 stores nationwide as "Heatwave Shelters," rest areas where people can briefly escape the heat.
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] CU announced on the 25th that it will provide its more than 15,000 stores nationwide as 'Heatwave Shelters,' resting spaces where people can temporarily escape the heat.
The Heatwave Shelter is a public interest campaign by CU since 2019 to allow vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant women, and the elderly to briefly avoid the heat at nearby CU stores. Until last year, only about 5,000 stores participated, but as the heatwave worsened this year, it was expanded to all stores. Customers visiting the stores to escape the heat will be provided with a 24-hour resting space regardless of whether they purchase products. However, considering the COVID-19 situation, operations will be flexible according to local government quarantine guidelines.
To encourage franchise owners' participation and raise public interest in the Heatwave Shelter, CU has also prepared an event through social networking services (SNS). From the 26th of this month until the 20th of next month, customers who take a photo certifying the Heatwave Shelter sticker attached to CU stores and post it on their Facebook or Instagram with hashtags will be entered into a draw to receive ‘HERYOO Mineral Water 1L.’
A BGF Retail official said, “For vulnerable groups without air conditioners or cooling devices, the heatwave can be another disaster, so nearby convenience stores can serve as an oasis. The active participation of franchise owners and the spread of awareness among customers will be a refreshing driving force to overcome this heat together.”
