[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Sumi] A story of a driver who paid 22 million won in medical expenses for a non-contact traffic accident has become a hot topic on YouTube.

On the 22nd, a video titled "An elderly woman on a bicycle who fell alone. Is the dashcam car the offender because of the yellow light?" was uploaded on the YouTube channel 'Han Moon-cheol TV'.

According to the video, around 7 a.m. on March 22, driver A was passing through a four-lane intersection in Miryang-si, Gyeongnam Province. At that time, A's vehicle speed was 42 km/h, exceeding the speed limit of 30 km/h.

A entered the intersection at the moment the traffic light turned yellow, and at that time, a bicycle traveling in the opposite direction from the right side of the vehicle towards the intersection wobbled and lost balance, falling down. The traffic light for the bicycle's direction was red.

Witnessing this, A immediately stopped the car. It was reported that bicycle rider B fell down in surprise as the distance between B and A's vehicle became close.

As a result of the accident, B was diagnosed with a femoral neck fracture requiring 12 weeks of treatment. Additionally, A bore approximately 22 million won in medical expenses for B.

Regarding the accident, A expressed feelings of injustice. A said, "It is hard to accept that the bicycle fell because of me, but despite that, I provided first aid at the scene and compensated all medical expenses through my insurance," adding, "B's side is showing gestures suggesting they will demand excessive settlement money and even pursue criminal charges."

He continued, "I understand that B's side has also filed a petition with the prosecution," and added, "I feel wronged and frustrated, and I have no idea how to resolve this."

In response, lawyer Han Moon-cheol advised, "Claim innocence by arguing that this accident occurred regardless of whether you violated the signal and that it happened in a 'dilemma zone'." The dilemma zone refers to the area where a driver hesitates whether to stop before the stop line or quickly pass through when the traffic light changes from green to yellow.

Lawyer Han also suggested, "If you have driver’s insurance, hire a lawyer and claim innocence," and added, "Use the criminal settlement money from the driver’s insurance to reach an agreement with the bicycle rider and reduce the possibility of imprisonment."

Netizens who watched this video reacted with comments such as "If that is the driver's fault, I would be too scared to drive," "Don't compensate if you are not at fault," "This is one of the most incomprehensible accidents ever," "It just makes me laugh," and "It's absurd."
