Yang Chen, the rising star of Chinese shooting, became the first gold medalist of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
On the 24th, Yang Chen won the women's 10m air rifle final at the Asaka Shooting Range in Tokyo, Japan, with a score of 251.8 points. The color of the medal was decided by the last shot. Yang Chen was trailing Anastasiia Galashina (Russian Olympic Committee) by 0.2 points up to the 23rd shot. However, she scored 9.8 points on the final 24th shot to take the lead. Galashina scored 8.9 points, earning the silver medal with 251.1 points. The bronze medal went to Nina Christen (Switzerland), who scored 230.6 points.
This competition featured 33 official events with a total of 339 gold medals at stake. Among 206 teams and over 11,000 athletes, Yang Chen was the first to win a gold medal. She said, "I am really happy to win in a fiercely contested match until the very end," adding, "Training to overcome pressure was effective. The coaches often created such situations, which helped me handle it." She also expressed, "I am glad to present a gold medal to my homeland on the 100th anniversary of the Communist Party."
Our athletes Kwon Eun-ji (Uljin County Office) and Park Hee-moon (Woori Bank) finished in 7th and 8th place respectively. Although they passed the preliminaries in 4th and 2nd place, they could not maintain their momentum.
