2021 Residential Area Lighting Environment Improvement Project: Replacement of 167 Old Security Lights with LED Fixtures
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] “I used to feel scared when passing through dark alleys late at night, but after they were replaced with LED lights, the alleys became bright, and I can walk safely now.”
Ms. Mi-young Park (a pseudonym), who lives in Daehyeong-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul, said the LED light replacement in the alleys was “a necessary project for residents' pedestrian safety.”
Mapo-gu (Mayor Dong-gyun Yoo) announced that it recently completed the “2021 Residential Area Light Environment Improvement Project,” which replaced 167 old security lights with LED fixtures in residential areas around Daehyeong-dong and Seongsan 1-dong.
The existing security lights had low energy efficiency and consumed a lot of electricity, and the light spread in all directions, causing severe glare for residents living in densely populated residential areas. Complaints about this were continuously raised, and many residents expressed anxiety when walking at night.
To address these issues, the project was carried out with a total budget of 92 million KRW, targeting 93 locations in Daehyeong-dong and 74 locations in Seongsan 1-dong over three months from April to June.
This security light replacement reduced energy consumption and resolved light pollution in residential areas. Most importantly, the alleys became brighter at night, enabling safe returns home for women and teenagers.
Additionally, since March this year, the district has been collaborating with the Safe Return Scouts and Mapo Police Station to ensure safe nighttime returns home for vulnerable groups such as women and teenagers.
By applying for the Safe Return Scout via the ‘Ansim-i app’ or by calling 120 or the district office situation room, applicants can meet a two-person scout team at an agreed location to accompany them home.
Last year, 14 Safe Return Scouts were active in Mapo-gu, supporting 9,610 return trips and conducting 31,689 local patrols.
Mayor Dong-gyun Yoo of Mapo-gu said, “With this replacement of old security lights, we can provide residents with a more comfortable living environment and safer pedestrian conditions. We will continue to promote the LED security light replacement project and do our best to create an environment where people can walk safely even at night.”
