[Asia Economy Reporter Park Cheol-eung] From now on, the expiration date will be replaced by the consumption period.
This is the content of the amendment to the "Act on Labeling and Advertising of Foods, etc." passed by the National Assembly plenary session on the 24th. The background is that the "expiration date," which is the period from the product's manufacturing date to the date it is allowed to be sold to consumers, was misunderstood by consumers as the point at which the food should be discarded.
The amended law requires the labeling of the food's "consumption period" instead of the previously indicated "expiration date," in accordance with international standards, so that consumers can obtain more accurate consumption information.
