[Asia Economy Reporter Yuri Kim] On the opening day of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the number of COVID-19 cases in Japan reached 4,225.


According to NHK's tally, as of 6:30 PM on that day, 4,225 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed nationwide in Japan. This is 1,170 fewer than the previous day but 793 more compared to a week earlier on the 16th.


The cumulative number of COVID-19 cases in Japan reached 862,855. The number of COVID-19 related deaths increased by 8, totaling 15,129.


Tokyo, the host city of the Olympics, reported 1,359 new COVID-19 cases on that day. This is 620 fewer than the previous day but 88 more compared to a week earlier.
