Samsung Files Patent for 'Rotating' Camera on Galaxy Z Flip4

Samsung Files Patent for 'Rotating' Camera on Galaxy Z Flip4 Source: Let's Go Digital

[Asia Economy Reporter Joselgina] An analysis has emerged that Samsung Electronics' next-generation foldable smartphone 'Galaxy Z Flip4,' set to be released next year, will be equipped with a rotating camera.

On the 22nd (local time), according to IT specialized media LetsGoDigital, Samsung Electronics filed a patent with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) earlier this year for a "foldable electronic device including a rotating camera placed in the hinge section." The patent was disclosed on this day as a 49-page document. The international filing date is January 14.

This patent is based on a clamshell design similar to the Galaxy Z Flip series. A rotating camera is installed between the cover display and the hinge of the Galaxy Z Flip, enabling the main dual camera module to function both as the main camera and the front selfie camera.

LetsGoDigital stated, "Samsung Electronics has found a way to handle dual cameras in the hinge section," adding, "The camera can rotate forward and backward to take photos from various angles, allowing selfies, regular photos, and video recording."

Accordingly, there is no need to separately install a hole-punch design selfie camera. With the camera position changed, the cover display size of the foldable smartphone can also become larger. It is expected that users will be able to check a large amount of information such as incoming call alerts and messages on the external screen without opening the foldable smartphone.

However, since the camera is located in the hinge section, there may be a kind of "camera bump" or protrusion when the device is unfolded. LetsGoDigital pointed out that Samsung Electronics, which has used a smooth hide-away hinge in terms of exterior design, faces the issue of whether it is willing to compromise with a design that does not allow the smartphone to lie flat on a table in the future.

Earlier, Samsung Electronics is scheduled to hold the Galaxy Unpacked event for the second half of the year on the 11th of next month and unveil the Galaxy Z Flip3 and Galaxy Z Fold3. The Galaxy Z Flip3 is known to feature a 6.7-inch foldable display and Qualcomm Snapdragon 888. The cover display will be expanded from the previous 1.1 inches to 1.9 inches, and it will have a two-tone design with different colors on the top of the device and the main body. The launch price is reported to be around 1.25 million KRW, which is 400,000 KRW cheaper than the previous model.
