Jangseong-gun, Hwangmir Land's 'Ginkgo Hydrangea Road' Attraction

Jangseong-gun, Hwangmir Land's 'Ginkgo Hydrangea Road' Attraction

[Jangseong=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Jo Hangyu] The ‘Ginkgo Hydrangea Road’ created in Hwangmireu Land, the upper stream area of Hwangryonggang in Jangseong-gun, Jeollanam-do, is gaining popularity as a hidden attraction, drawing many visitors.

According to the county on the 22nd, the Ginkgo Hydrangea Road is a small themed garden located on the banks of Hwangryonggang and can be found by crossing Hwangmireu Bridge and heading to the right.

The ginkgo trees here have a unique story unlike ordinary trees; they were street trees planted in the Donghwa-myeon area in the 1980s.

At the time of planting, they were resistant to pests and diseases and were loved for decorating the streets with bright yellow leaves every autumn. However, as time passed and the trees grew, the foul odor from the fruits caused distress to the villagers.

Additionally, the roots pushed up the pavement blocks and damaged nearby houses and residential walls, causing property damage.

Unable to endure this any longer, the residents of Donghwa-myeon requested the county to remove the trees.

The county formed a dedicated team, held internal meetings, and conducted thorough on-site investigations. As a result, it was decided to transplant the trees to the banks of Hwangryonggang in Hwangmireu Land after excavation work.

This was a clever plan that solved the residents’ difficulties while creating a new attraction along Hwangryonggang.

Previously, the county finally planted 69 transplantable ginkgo trees near Hwangmireu Land out of a total of 101 trees last year.

County Governor Yoo Doo-seok said, “The ginkgo trees, once a nuisance to the residents of Donghwa-myeon, have been reborn as hidden treasures through a ‘change of perspective.’ The autumn scenery of Hwangryonggang will be dyed in an even more beautiful yellow light.”
