Ministry of Justice Regular Personnel Changes for 142 Public Interest Legal Officers... Adjustment of Allocation by Institution

[Asia Economy Reporter Baek Kyunghwan] The Ministry of Justice has carried out the regular personnel appointments for public interest legal officers for the year 2021. Reflecting the significant decrease in the number of public interest legal officers, including new appointments, the deployment numbers have been adjusted.

On the 21st, the Ministry of Justice announced that it will conduct regular personnel appointments for a total of 142 public interest legal officers as of August 1, in line with new appointments.

A notable point is that among the 142 personnel subject to this appointment, only 28 are new appointees. The number of new appointees has rapidly decreased from 205 in 2016, to 178 in 2017, 86 in 2018, 60 in 2019, and 54 in 2020.

The Ministry of Justice cites the abolition of the bar exam and the decrease in the number of judicial officer candidates as causes. Accordingly, in this appointment, considering the sharp decline in the number of public interest legal officers, changes in the work environment, and the increase or decrease in workload by institution, the deployment numbers by institution were adjusted. In particular, the Ministry carefully analyzed the revision status of laws such as the Act on Litigation Involving the State as a Party and the Wage Claim Guarantee Act, as well as the resulting increase or decrease in workload by institution, to determine the scale of personnel reductions for public interest legal officers by deployment institution.

A Ministry of Justice official explained, "We aimed for fair personnel placement by applying personnel standards based on objective evaluation data such as personal preference, workload and work evaluation at the current workplace, job-related expertise, awards, and job training performance."
