[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] Kim Yeon-koung, a member of the women's volleyball national team who departed to participate in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, was spotted wearing Samsung Electronics' next-generation smartwatch, the 'Galaxy Watch4,' drawing attention.
IT specialized media SamMobile reported on the 20th that Samsung Electronics' new smartwatch was spotted on Kim Yeon-koung's wrist as she departed.
The model has been confirmed as the Galaxy Watch4, which will be unveiled at next month's Galaxy Unpacked event. Examining the airport photos, the design matches the images of the Galaxy Watch4 leaked previously through Amazon's website and IT tipsters. The Galaxy Watch4 is expected to be released with various strap colors including white, navy blue, and yellow, in addition to the olive green strap worn by Kim Yeon-koung. It is also the first product to feature Google's unified wearable OS instead of Samsung Electronics' proprietary OS, Tizen.
Notably, Kim Yeon-koung is a member of 'Team Galaxy,' composed of world-class athletes assembled by Samsung Electronics, the only Korean company that is a global Olympic partner, to promote the Galaxy brand. This has led to interpretations that a kind of leak marketing using Kim Yeon-koung has begun less than a month before the Galaxy Unpacked event.
Samsung Electronics began its Olympic partner activities on the 15th, two weeks before the Tokyo Olympics opening. They provided approximately 17,000 units of the latest smartphone, the 'Galaxy S21 5G Tokyo 2020 Olympic Edition,' to all Olympic and Paralympic athletes and also opened the Samsung Galaxy House utilizing metaverse technology.
SamMobile stated, "A Samsung ambassador was spotted wearing the Galaxy Watch4. Is this a calculated leak or simply a mistake by (Kim Yeon-koung)?" They added, "Previous leaks (through Samsung Electronics' official YouTube videos) were clearly calculated, but this time it is uncertain." Recently, a 'Voice of Galaxy' video posted on Samsung Electronics' official YouTube channel featured an employee wearing the Galaxy Watch4 Classic.
Samsung Electronics' Galaxy Unpacked event, where new smartwatches and smartphones will be unveiled, is expected to take place around August 11. Official invitations have not yet been sent. However, when asking the AI assistant 'Bixby' "When is the next Unpacked date?" it responds, "Listen carefully to the sounds you hear now," followed by Morse code indicating 'August 11.'
Previously, an invitation image related to the Unpacked event was leaked by IT tipster Evan Blass. The image stated that the Unpacked event would be held at 6 PM Moscow time on August 11.
