[Asia Economy Reporter Donghyun Choi] The group BTS successfully passed the baton by topping the US Billboard main singles chart 'Hot 100' with their new song 'Permission to Dance,' following 'Butter.'
On the 19th (local time), Billboard announced that BTS's 'Permission to Dance,' released on the 9th, reached number one on the 'Hot 100' chart (dated July 24). 'Permission to Dance,' which debuted at number one, replaced the digital single 'Butter,' which had held the top spot on the 'Hot 100' chart for seven consecutive weeks from June 5 to July 17. 'Butter' ranked seventh on the 'Hot 100,' giving BTS two songs in the top 10 of the 'Hot 100' chart.
According to MRC data cited by Billboard, in the weekly tally up to July 15, 'Permission to Dance' recorded 15.9 million streams and 140,000 downloads in the US. Radio listenership was counted at 1.1 million.
BTS made history in Korean popular music by becoming the first Korean artist to top the Billboard 'Hot 100' with their digital single 'Dynamite,' released in August last year. Since then, they have reached number one on the 'Hot 100' five times. Achieving five number-one songs on the 'Hot 100' chart in 10 months and 2 weeks is the shortest period since Michael Jackson, who topped the 'Hot 100' with five songs in 9 months and 2 weeks from 1987 to 1988. Additionally, BTS is the first artist since Drake in July 2018 to pass the baton by succeeding themselves at number one on the 'Hot 100.'
BTS has reached number one on the Billboard 'Hot 100' chart a total of 13 times, including three times with 'Dynamite,' once with the remix version of 'Savage Love' featuring them, once with the title track 'Life Goes On' from the album 'BE,' seven times with 'Butter,' and once with 'Permission to Dance.'
Meanwhile, 'Permission to Dance' also achieved a 'hot shot debut' by entering the Billboard 'Digital Song Sales' chart and immediately taking the number one spot.
