[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won traveled to Washington last week to inspect business operations in the United States. This trip came about two months after his visit to the U.S. during the South Korea-U.S. summit on May 21. It is interpreted that he departed to strengthen his network within the U.S. and to collaborate on IT-related business in Silicon Valley.

According to business circles on the 19th, Chairman Chey Tae-won encouraged employees at SK’s Washington branch last week and strengthened his global network by meeting with officials from U.S. think tanks and others.

Chairman Chey then visited local branches such as SK Hynix in the western U.S. region to receive business status reports and is also known to have planned to conduct business cooperation meetings with IT-related companies in the U.S. while inspecting his American operations.

An SK official stated, “Chairman Chey Tae-won’s recent trip was intended to resume network meetings that had been suspended due to COVID-19, as well as to inspect business operations in the Americas and encourage employees.”

Chairman Chey’s U.S. trip resumed two months after his visit to Washington and Georgia in May as the chairman of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry. During that visit, he actively engaged in private diplomacy by expanding economic cooperation networks with U.S. business figures.

Specifically, on May 21, Chairman Chey attended the Korea-U.S. Business Roundtable held in Washington, D.C., where he emphasized expanding investment in three major industries?semiconductors, batteries, and bio?and creating social value centered on local communities, including quality jobs and environmental protection. He also attended the joint press conference of the Korea-U.S. summit held at the White House.

Then, on May 24, he participated in the 'Korean War Heroes Memorial Ceremony' held in front of the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Atlanta, Georgia, honoring the sacrifices of U.S. soldiers who died in the Korean War, further strengthening Korea-U.S. friendly relations through this extensive diplomatic activity.
