[Asia Economy Reporter Song Seung-seop] On the 19th, high school seniors will begin receiving vaccinations. This is the first time that adolescents have been included in the vaccination group in South Korea.

According to the COVID-19 Vaccination Response Promotion Team (Promotion Team) on the 18th, the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine will be administered to high school seniors and school staff ahead of the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT).

A total of 630,000 students and staff from educational institutions, including 3,184 high schools nationwide, are eligible. Vaccinations will be conducted at approximately 290 vaccination centers across the country. The first dose will be given by the 30th of this month, and the second dose will be administered from the 9th to the 20th of next month.

Educational institutions include high schools under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, equivalent alternative schools, unlicensed educational facilities, and lifelong education facilities recognized for academic credit. High school seniors currently enrolled or on leave at these institutions, as well as those expected to graduate early to take the 2022 college entrance exam, will receive the vaccine. For school staff, all personnel who have close contact with students, including those on leave or secondment, are included.

The Promotion Team stated that vaccinations for adolescents are conducted with the voluntary consent of both the guardians and the individuals themselves. High school seniors should visit vaccination centers with their ID, vaccination consent form, and preliminary examination form under the guidance of their teachers. If they are not feeling well on the vaccination day, the schedule can be postponed.

Additionally, the Promotion Team urged that since myocarditis and pericarditis may very rarely occur after receiving the Pfizer vaccine, anyone showing suspicious symptoms should seek medical attention promptly.
