[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] LG Electronics announced on the 18th that employees who completed the software expert training course held a metaverse graduation ceremony so they could share the joy of completion in the same space.

The metaverse refers to a three-dimensional virtual world where activities similar to the real world take place. Considering the difficulty of holding face-to-face events due to COVID-19, LG Electronics recently held its first graduation ceremony using this platform.

For the ceremony, the virtual space was designed to closely resemble the actual appearance of the LG Twin Towers along with the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) campus in the United States, which provided the researchers' training courses. Participants created digital avatars, characters representing their roles in virtual reality, to attend the ceremony.

Before the ceremony began, attendees took time to tour the LG Twin Towers and the CMU campus. Afterwards, they moved to the event hall set up on the CMU campus to receive their certificates. They communicated with colleagues in the same space through their avatars.

The researchers selected earlier this year recently completed the software expert training course jointly operated by LG Electronics and CMU. They collaborated remotely with CMU faculty to carry out projects and received systematic education. The total number of employees who completed the architect training course to enhance software design capabilities and the security expert training course to strengthen software security capabilities reached about 100.

LG Electronics plans to select software architects and software security experts from among the employees who completed the course through document screening and in-depth interviews. So far, more than 600 people have been selected through domestic and international software expert development programs.

Park Il-pyung, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of LG Electronics, said, "By preparing the metaverse graduation ceremony for the first time, we provided an opportunity for employees who completed the software expert training to share the joy of completion in the same space," adding, "We will continue to nurture world-class software experts to provide differentiated customer value."
