[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Chun-hee] The number of new COVID-19 cases in South Korea recorded 1,536. Although the scale of new infections slightly decreased from the 1,600 range for two consecutive days, the spread remains intense.


The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency's Central Disease Control Headquarters announced on the 16th at midnight that the cumulative number of COVID-19 cases increased by 1,536 from the previous day to 175,046. The sources of new infections were 1,476 local transmissions and 60 imported cases.


Among the locally transmitted cases, 1,107 cases, accounting for 75%, occurred in the Seoul metropolitan area. The metropolitan area has recorded over 1,000 cases for three consecutive days. The breakdown is Seoul 564 cases (38.2%), Gyeonggi 448 cases (30.4%), and Incheon 95 cases (6.4%).


In other regions, confirmed cases were ▲Busan 49 ▲Daegu 32 ▲Gwangju 23 ▲Daejeon 49 ▲Ulsan 14 ▲Sejong 7 ▲Gangwon 27 ▲Chungbuk 13 ▲Chungnam 38 ▲Jeonbuk 12 ▲Jeonnam 7 ▲Gyeongbuk 10 ▲Gyeongnam 79 ▲Jeju 9.


There were 60 imported cases. Among them, 34 were detected during quarantine, and 26 were confirmed locally. There were 28 Korean nationals and 32 foreigners. By country, the largest number was 26 arrivals from Indonesia, where the 'Delta variant (Indian variant)' is rapidly spreading. Among them, 9 were Korean nationals and 17 were foreigners.


The total number of tests conducted the previous day was 138,533. At temporary screening clinics set up in the metropolitan area, 82,111 tests were conducted, confirming 334 new cases, and at temporary screening clinics outside the metropolitan area, 8,294 tests were conducted, confirming 17 new cases.

Meanwhile, as of midnight on the same day, 122,645 people received new COVID-19 vaccinations. The cumulative number of first-dose vaccinations reached 15,960,609. The vaccination rate relative to the population is 31.1%. Among the new vaccinations, 442 received AstraZeneca (AZ), and 122,203 received Pfizer. There were no new vaccinations for Moderna or Janssen.


The number of people who completed vaccination increased by 120,041 from the previous day to 6,326,705. The vaccination rate for the second dose relative to the population is 12.3%. Among those who received the first dose of the AZ vaccine, 12,961 received the second dose of AZ, and 83,882 received a second dose of Pfizer as a mixed vaccination. For Pfizer only, 25,198 additional people received the second dose, completing vaccination for 3,629,380 people. Moderna's additional vaccination interval has not yet arrived.
