[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Ju-yeon] Jo Eung-cheon, a lawmaker classified as a principled member within the Democratic Party of Korea, interpreted the expression 'Ddaekkaemun' mentioned by Representative Song Young-gil the day before as "a warning that things cannot continue as they are."
On the 6th, Jo appeared on KBS Radio's 'Choi Kyung-young's Strongest Current Affairs' and, regarding Song's use of the term 'Ddaekkaemun' (a slang term referring to staunch supporters of President Moon Jae-in) at the Kwanhun Club debate, asked, "Was it a taboo word that has now been lifted?" and made this remark.
Representative Song used the term 'Ddaekkaemun' the day before, saying, "With a complacent mindset of preferring to vote for the opposition rather than a certain candidate becoming president, one cannot protect President Moon Jae-in nor ensure his proper success." Here, the certain candidate refers to Lee Jae-myung, the non-mainstream candidate who is leading in approval ratings and is the Governor of Gyeonggi Province.
Jo said, "During the Gyeonggi Province governor election, there was a lot of noise because of the 'Lady Hyegyeong Kim' incident," adding, "So there were quite a few party members who voted the other way, saying it would be better for Nam Kyung-pil to win."
He continued, "I even heard such stories during the Gyeonggi Province governor election, so if someone votes for the opposing candidate in a presidential election, it would be a big problem. Why wouldn't the representative be worried about that?" he empathized.
Jo also said, "There is still a strong anti-Lee Jae-myung sentiment among party members," and added, "Even for me, since I am a fellow lawmaker from the Gyeonggi region, when I attend various debates hosted in Gyeonggi Province and do not take photos with Governor Lee, people attack and say, 'Look, he is on Lee Jae-myung's side,' and say unpleasant things." Jo added, "But since I do not belong to any faction, I am currently serving as an election commissioner."
