[Asia Economy Reporter Seo So-jung] The government has denied foreign media reports claiming that South Korea is negotiating domestic production of 1 billion doses of vaccines with Pfizer and Moderna.
On the 5th, the Ministry of Health and Welfare stated in a press release, "The foreign media report that the Korean government is negotiating domestic production of 1 billion doses of vaccines with Pfizer and Moderna is not true."
The ministry explained, "Vaccine production contracts are matters for negotiations between companies," and added, "In a foreign media interview, the Director of the Health Industry Policy Bureau explained that South Korea has secured the capacity to produce more than 1 billion doses of messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) vaccines."
On the same day, a foreign media outlet reported that South Korea is negotiating domestic production of up to 1 billion doses with mRNA COVID-19 vaccine manufacturers such as Pfizer and Moderna. According to the foreign media, if this negotiation between South Korea and the vaccine manufacturers is finalized, it would help activate vaccine supply in Asia, which is limited compared to North America or Europe.
