[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Hyun-seok] Paratech is showing strong performance. It appears that the stock price was influenced after Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party presidential candidate, sent a letter to members of the National Assembly's Public Administration and Security Committee, urging them to join efforts to strengthen safety standards to prevent recurrence of the fire at the Coupang logistics center in Icheon, Gyeonggi Province.
As of 9:53 AM on the 5th, Paratech was trading at 3,490 KRW, up 11.15% (350 KRW) compared to the previous trading day.
On the 30th of last month, Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jae-myung sent a letter to all 22 members of the Public Administration and Security Committee, stating, "Gyeonggi Province has been doing its best to improve systems through experiencing various fires, but there are limits to what local governments can do." He continued, "I ask for your attention and cooperation so that strengthened safety standards appropriate to the risks of facilities can be established to ensure the effectiveness of public safety."
Candidate Lee added, "Elderly care facilities and construction sites are also very vulnerable to fires," and "Special safety devices tailored to the characteristics of places with particular risks are necessary."
Democratic Party lawmaker Baek Hye-ryun, after reviewing the letter, proposed an amendment to the Building Act to strengthen standards for installing fire compartments in logistics warehouses and to include basement floor areas in the floor area ratio. She also proposed an amendment to the Firefighting Facilities Act to retroactively apply the installation of simple sprinklers to small elderly care facilities.
A public opinion poll released on the 4th showed that in a hypothetical two-way presidential race, Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jae-myung surpassed former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-youl beyond the margin of error.
According to a survey conducted by Global Research from the 30th of last month to the 2nd of this month targeting 1,000 people aged 18 and over nationwide, Governor Lee recorded a support rate of 44.7%, while former Prosecutor General Yoon received 36.7%.
