Seongdong-gu Utilizes Empty Parking Spaces with Artificial Intelligence (AI) The district signed a business agreement with LightVision for AI-based parking sharing.

[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jeong Won-oh) signed a business agreement with the local social venture Light Vision on the 23rd of last month to share parking lots.

Through this agreement, the district will officially introduce a parking sharing service using artificial intelligence (AI) video information, allowing 138 parking spaces in four sections of resident-priority parking zones that are vacant to be shared with general vehicles.

Resident-priority parking zones are often empty during the day because nearby office workers assigned to these zones leave for work. External users must apply separately to the relevant institution (Seongdong-gu Urban Management Corporation) to use the vacant parking spaces, but unauthorized use without application also occurs.

The AI parking sharing service introduced by Seongdong-gu utilizes vacant resident-priority parking zones, enabling anyone to use the parking lot easily and conveniently.

Installed CCTVs recognize parked vehicles using AI, identify license plates, automatically record parking time upon parking, and automatically process payment upon exit.

Additionally, to accommodate existing users of resident-priority parking zones, 20% of the space is reserved, and the number of available parking spaces can be checked in real-time to improve space utilization efficiency.

Last year, the district was selected for the ‘Private Intelligent Information Service Expansion Contest’ together with Light Vision, securing a total project budget of approximately 1.2 billion KRW and began service development.

Light Vision is a social venture located in the Ansim Shopping District of Seongsu-dong and, together with the district, started a pilot service on the 5th of this month, with full operation scheduled for mid-August.

Users can sign up and use the service through a QR code attached to the parking zone or a dedicated mobile app. Once personal information such as card details is entered once, it is securely stored and can be used for simple authentication during entry and exit.

Jeong Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “Creating public parking lots requires enormous budgets, but the introduction of a parking sharing system using AI video technology will reduce costs, alleviate parking difficulties, and serve as a good example of spreading a culture of sharing space.”
