LIG Nex1 Completes Second Delivery of Next-Generation Military Radio TMMR

[The Asia Business Daily, Military Correspondent Yang Nakgyu] LIG Nex1 completed the second delivery of next-generation military radios (TMMR), which will support future combat systems, on June 25.

According to LIG Nex1 on June 29, the vehicle-mounted TMMRs delivered this time will be installed in operational vehicles used by key commanders and staff in field units. By interoperating with existing portable and vehicle-mounted radios, they are expected to enhance the military's operational capabilities.

Once delivery and handover to the military for the initial mass production contract of TMMR are completed by October this year, subsequent mass production contracts and manufacturing for additional quantities will proceed sequentially.

In April last year, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration's Defense Project Promotion Committee decided to pursue mass production of TMMR worth 1.2 trillion won by 2027.

Developed under the supervision of the Agency for Defense Development with participation from LIG Nex1, the TMMR features multi-band, multi-function, and multi-channel capabilities, enabling simultaneous communication over multiple channels with a single device.

Additionally, as a state-of-the-art network radio using SDR (Software Defined Radio) technology, it allows various communication mode operations in HF, VHF, and UHF bands through software selection. It is expected to replace existing communication equipment such as the PRC-999K/VRC-947 and PRC-950K currently used by the military.

Moving away from analog voice-only systems, the TMMR enables simultaneous transmission of large-capacity data and voice. It also supports integrated operation of network-centric command and tactical systems, and enables joint operations across the Army, Navy, and Air Force. As such, it will serve as the foundational system for network-centric operations, which is a core area of the Army Tiger 4.0 initiative currently being promoted by the Army.

An LIG Nex1 representative stated, "Thanks to the active interest and support of stakeholders from industry, academia, research, and the military, we will do our utmost to manage schedules and quality in cooperation with our partner companies so that the mass-produced TMMR can contribute to strengthening the military's capabilities."
