Blue House Strongly Protests Chosun Ilbo's Inappropriate English Editorial Headline and Illustration

[Asia Economy, reporter Park Jihwan] On June 25, it was reported that the Blue House strongly protested to Chosun Ilbo regarding the recent use of an inappropriate editorial headline and illustration of President Moon Jae-in in the English edition of the newspaper.

A Blue House official told Yonhap News Agency, "Park Soo-hyun, Senior Secretary for Public Communication, conveyed strong regret and protest to Chosun Ilbo over the inappropriate editorial headline and use of the illustration in its English edition."

On June 23, Chosun Ilbo published an English editorial titled "Why Does Moon Keep Sucking up to N.Korea?" In the Korean edition, the headline read, "Even after doing everything Kim Yo-jong asks, all Moon gets in return is mockery and contempt."

The Blue House took issue with the expression "Sucking up" (meaning to flatter or fawn). While this phrase is not considered vulgar, it is generally not used in news articles except in direct quotations.

After the Blue House's protest, Chosun Ilbo revised the editorial headline to "Why Is Moon Still Wooing N.Korea?"

The Blue House also raised concerns about Chosun Ilbo's inappropriate use of an illustration of President Moon in articles about incidents. Previously, Chosun Ilbo used an illustration of President Moon, originally created for an external contributor's column last year, in incident-related articles four times between September last year and February this year.

Chosun Ilbo issued a notice on its website stating, "We apologize for using an inappropriate illustration" and "will strictly manage such matters."
