[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] KT M Mobile announced on the 25th that it will launch a senior-exclusive budget phone plan to bridge the digital divide among the elderly.
This specialized product was launched through the collaboration of four organizations and companies: ▲Seoul Metropolitan Government ▲KT M Mobile ▲Samsung Electronics ▲Samsung Electronics Sales, aiming to provide tailored support for digitally marginalized groups. KT M Mobile is participating in this support project for the second consecutive year following last year.
KT M Mobile will offer a practical smartphone, the ‘Galaxy A12,’ with a public subsidy, along with a fully unlimited plan ‘Senior Safety 2GB+’ (unlimited voice and text, with 400Kbps speed after the basic 2GB data is used) at a discounted price of 8,900 KRW per month to seniors aged 65 and older residing in Seoul who own feature phones, until the end of the year.
Eligible users can use the service for a monthly payment of 19,526 KRW, which includes the device installment (based on 24 months) and the plan fee. Smartphone purchase and activation will be conducted at 34 Samsung Digital Plaza locations within Seoul.
KT M Mobile decided to apply both the public subsidy and the plan discount simultaneously to help reduce the communication cost burden for information-vulnerable groups. Generally, budget phone consumers choose either the public subsidy or the plan discount to receive contract benefits.
Additionally, to address concerns about extra charges among the elderly, the offered plan has been upgraded to an unlimited product that supports voice, text, and 400Kbps speed after monthly data is exhausted, at the same price as last year.
Chae Jeong-ho, CEO of KT M Mobile, stated, “As the industry’s number one operator, we will continue to take responsibility and actively participate in projects and activities that help solve social issues such as bridging the digital information gap and supporting marginalized groups.”
