[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Seo Young-seo] A fishing vessel that was taking on water while returning to port after fishing was safely rescued thanks to the Coast Guard's prompt response.
According to Mokpo Coast Guard Station (Chief Im Jae-su) on the 24th, at 2:04 p.m. on the 23rd, a report was received that a 2.99-ton coastal gillnet fishing vessel A (registered in Sinan, with 1 crew member on board) experienced flooding while returning to port near 2 km north of Imjado Island, Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do.
The Coast Guard dispatched patrol vessels, coastal rescue boats from the substation, and the West Sea Special Rescue Team to the scene, while instructing the captain of vessel A to check his safety status and wear a life jacket.
The Coast Guard arrived at the scene within 7 minutes of receiving the report, boarded vessel A, confirmed seawater was entering the fish hold on the bow deck, and promptly carried out dewatering operations.
Fortunately, no additional flooding or marine pollution occurred, and the Coast Guard directly boarded vessel A to manage safety, successfully bringing it into the Chamdo Dock at Jido, Sinan-gun at around 3:33 p.m. the same day.
A Mokpo Coast Guard official stated, “It was confirmed that seawater entered the vessel due to excessive loading of fishing gear,” and urged, “When fishing at sea, please pay attention to safety along with engine checks before departure.”
