[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] As the number of spectators for the Tokyo Olympics is set to be reduced, hundreds of thousands of tickets are expected to go through refund procedures.

According to the Asahi Shimbun on the 24th, the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Organizing Committee announced that the results of a re-draw to reduce the number of valid tickets among the sold Olympic tickets will be announced on the official sales website on the morning of the 6th of next month.

The events subject to the ticket re-draw include athletics, baseball, soccer, golf, modern pentathlon, rugby, softball, surfing, opening and closing ceremonies, totaling 97 sessions, among which 910,000 tickets will lose their validity.

Initially, about 4.48 million tickets were sold. However, due to the one-year postponement of the Games, refunds and cancellations have continued, leaving 3.63 million tickets valid, from which 910,000 will be further reduced to 2.72 million tickets.

The Organizing Committee plans to refund the tickets that are not selected in the draw.

The Japanese government and the Organizing Committee decided to allow spectators up to 50% of the stadium capacity, with a maximum of 10,000 people during the Tokyo Olympics. They also plan to consider switching to games without spectators if a state of emergency is declared due to the rapid spread of COVID-19 infections.

Depending on the COVID-19 spread situation, there is a possibility that the procedure to reduce the number of tickets will be carried out again.
