Daesang Cheongjeongwon Launches 'Healthy Maesil Extract with Live Prebiotics'


[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-seon] Daesang Cheongjeongwon announced on the 24th that it has launched the ‘Healthy Maesil Extract with Living Prebiotics,’ made from 100% domestically grown maesil (Korean green plum) and oligosaccharides.


As the trend of reducing sugar intake spreads recently, the number of consumers seeking healthy sweeteners is increasing, leading to a rise in the use of maesil extract as a sugar substitute. In response, Daesang has introduced a new product with reduced sugar content and using isomalto-oligosaccharides, targeting the cheongryu (clear syrup) market.


This new product contains living prebiotics, isomalto-oligosaccharides, which survive even in the organic acids of maesil, allowing consumers to intake the beneficial components of oligosaccharides intact. In fact, isomalto-oligosaccharides are resistant to acid and heat, so when used in various dishes, the oligosaccharide components undergo minimal changes. According to a study published in the Journal of the Korean Society of Food Science and Technology titled ‘Changes in Oligosaccharide Content during Storage of Maesil Extract Manufactured with Functional Oligosaccharides,’ maesil extract made with added isomalto-oligosaccharides and aged for 90 days showed about 75% of oligosaccharides remaining. In contrast, maesil extract made with added fructo-oligosaccharides showed no remaining oligosaccharides.


The ‘Healthy Maesil Extract with Living Prebiotics’ reduces sugar content by 60% compared to using sugar, allowing for a healthier enjoyment, and uses carefully selected 100% domestically grown maesil. It also helps remove odors in fish and meat dishes, and can be diluted with water or carbonated water at a 3 to 1 ratio to enjoy as a refreshing maesil ade or a warm maesil tea.
