[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The European Union (EU) has imposed additional sanctions targeting officials and economic entities related to the Myanmar military, which has been harshly suppressing protesters.
On the 21st (local time), the EU Council froze the assets and imposed entry bans into the EU on eight individuals, including the Myanmar Minister of Home Affairs, three economic organizations, and one veterans' group. The goal of this measure is to restrict all activities through which the Myanmar military profits from Myanmar's natural resources.
Since February, the Myanmar military has carried out a coup d'?tat and harshly suppressed protesters resisting it, resulting in the deaths of over 860 civilians. Previously, the EU had imposed sanctions on military officials responsible for such harsh crackdowns.
With this additional sanction, the number of individuals sanctioned by the EU Council has increased to 43, and the number of organizations to six.
