Proactive Establishment of Greenhouse Gas Reduction Strategies for Achieving Carbon Neutrality by 2050

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Shim Kyung-taek] As the role of local governments as practical agents for carbon neutrality and the Green New Deal grows, Yeosu City in Jeollanam-do has launched a project to establish a "Climate Change Response Plan for Achieving Carbon Neutrality by 2050."

According to the city, a kickoff briefing was held on the 21st at the city hall situation room, presided over by Mayor Kwon Oh-bong.

The meeting was attended by 35 people, including the president of the Yeosu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the chairman of the Yeosu Industrial Complex Factory Managers' Association, industry stakeholders who need to actively participate in carbon neutrality, city council members, officials related to carbon neutrality, and the service provider.

Over six months until the end of November, a strategy for the next 10 years will be established aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050, encompassing greenhouse gas reduction measures and climate change adaptation plans tailored to Yeosu Bay's regional characteristics.

The main tasks include analyzing Yeosu City's climate change trends and conditions, assessing current greenhouse gas emissions and forecasts, presenting a vision and promotion strategy to achieve the 2050 carbon neutrality goal, establishing a mid- to long-term greenhouse gas reduction implementation roadmap and detailed action plans, and proposing greenhouse gas reduction implementation management measures.

Reflecting the unique characteristic of hosting the country's largest national industrial complex, Yeosu City is preparing mid- to long-term greenhouse gas reduction measures that include not only non-industrial sectors under local government authority such as buildings, transportation, waste, and carbon sinks but also industrial and energy sectors under national government authority.

During the plan establishment process, a Climate Change Countermeasures Committee and a citizen participation group from various sectors including public, private, industry, and academia will be formed and operated to efficiently promote the climate change response plan and strengthen local government management, incorporating diverse opinions on carbon neutrality into the project.

Additionally, to establish a solid climate change response plan, Yeosu City has formed and operates a Climate Change Response TF team consisting of 17 department heads and 27 working-level team leaders from 17 departments related to carbon neutrality.
