[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Ju Cheol-in] The Planning and Administration Committee of the Daegu Metropolitan Council announced on the 22nd that it has approved the "Proposal to Change Daegu City's Jurisdictional Area for the Incorporation of Gunwi County" drafted by Daegu City.
Earlier, Daegu City requested the city council's opinion on the jurisdictional area change proposal in accordance with the Local Autonomy Act. Legally, this procedure must be completed before submitting the incorporation proposal of Gunwi County to the government.
At the meeting, it was reported that no objections were raised because the incorporation issue had already been agreed upon between local governments.
However, there was a request to make efforts to broadly listen to the opinions of city and provincial residents to avoid repeating the unsuccessful experience of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk administrative integration.
Yoon Young-ae, Chairperson of the Planning and Administration Committee, said, “Since the integrated new airport promotion has already been policy-wise agreed upon, it is expected that the proposal will pass smoothly in the plenary session.”
If it passes the plenary session, the incorporation process of Gunwi County into Daegu is also expected to accelerate. Daegu City plans to recommend the jurisdictional area change to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety in July once the city council approves the proposal.
Gyeongbuk Province is also known to plan to submit its proposal around August. Based on this, if the bill drafted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety passes the National Assembly and is promulgated, the incorporation process will be completed.
Meanwhile, Daegu City’s position is that the bill must be promulgated by December this year at the latest so that the local elections next year can be held with Gunwi County incorporated.
