‘Appeal for National Assembly Act Amendment’ Lee Chun-hee, Mayor of Sejong, Sends Personal Letters to All Members of the National Assembly

[Asia Economy (Sejong) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Lee Chun-hee, Mayor of Sejong City, will deliver a personal letter urging the revision of the National Assembly Act to all members of the National Assembly within this month.

According to Sejong City on the 22nd, Mayor Lee announced that he will deliver the personal letter to all members of the National Assembly, including Park Byeong-seok, Speaker of the National Assembly, Song Young-gil, leader of the Democratic Party, and Lee Jun-seok, leader of the People Power Party.

The delivery of the personal letter follows the action on the 15th when a statement was read and a one-person protest was held in front of the National Assembly building in Yeouido. It reflects the mayor’s determination that the National Assembly Act can no longer be delayed if the design costs for the Sejong Assembly Hall are to be executed within this year.

The city regards this extraordinary session of the National Assembly as the last deadline for the passage of the amendment to the National Assembly Act. It is cautious about the Sejong Assembly Hall issue being politically exploited amid the presidential election campaign.

In the personal letter, Mayor Lee Chun-hee urged, “In April, the ruling and opposition parties agreed in the National Assembly Steering Committee to process the amendment to the National Assembly Act by June. Since both sides have already sufficiently debated and discussed, for the sake of the nation’s long-term future, the ruling and opposition parties must now engage in bipartisan cooperation to establish the Sejong Assembly Hall.”

Meanwhile, the one-person protest in front of the National Assembly building in Yeouido, started by Mayor Lee, is still ongoing. Separately, civic groups from the Chungcheong region, including the Chungcheong Public-Private Cooperation Council, have consecutively issued statements urging the passage of the National Assembly Act.
