Total Phosphorus Treatment Facility at Tancheon Water Reclamation Center Following Seonam Water Reclamation Center... Stable Treatment of Wastewater Generated South of the Han River
Advanced Treatment of Wastewater Through a Third Stage
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government will complete the construction of a "Total Phosphorus (T-P) Treatment Facility" capable of processing up to 450,000 tons of sewage per day at the Tancheon Water Reclamation Center by the end of July. Operation will begin in August.
On the 22nd, Seoul announced that following the completion and operation of the Total Phosphorus Treatment Facility (737,000 tons) at the Seonam Water Reclamation Center at the end of April, the operation of the Total Phosphorus Treatment Facility at the Tancheon Water Reclamation Center will enable cleaner recycling and discharge of up to 1.18 million tons of sewage per day south of the Han River.
The "Total Phosphorus (T-P) Treatment Facility" is a tertiary treatment facility that further processes sewage that has already undergone primary treatment, biological reaction tanks, and secondary treatment. By coagulating and removing total phosphorus contained in the sewage, the quality of the discharged water can be stably enhanced beyond the legal standard (0.5 mg/L).
The Seoul Institute of Health and Environment conducted a performance guarantee test on the Total Phosphorus Treatment Facility at the Tancheon Water Reclamation Center, revealing that the total phosphorus concentration in the sewage was 86.0% lower than the legal discharge water quality standard (0.5 mg/L). Previously, the Seonam Water Reclamation Center showed a reduction of 92.4%. The Seoul Water Reclamation Facilities Corporation expects that once the Total Phosphorus Treatment Facility is operational, in addition to strengthening discharge water quality standards, the treated sewage can be reused in various fields such as road cleaning water and washing/spraying water.
Park Sang-don, Director of the Seoul Water Reclamation Facilities Corporation, stated, "Until now, Seoul has been discharging sewage in compliance with legal discharge water quality standards, but with the completion of the Total Phosphorus Treatment Facility at the Tancheon Water Reclamation Center, we can now secure discharge water quality more stably." He added, "By operating advanced water treatment facilities in the future, not only will stable operation and management of water reclamation centers be possible, but it is also expected to contribute to the improvement of the Han River aquatic ecosystem and citizens' living environment."
