Seoul City Launches Intensive Safety Inspections at 67 Road and Bus Stop Adjacent Demolition Sites

Focused Inspection of Demolition Sites Adjacent to Main Roads, Secondary Roads, and Bus Stops to Alleviate Citizens' Concerns

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Seoul City announced on the 22nd that it has selected 67 demolition sites adjacent to major roads, secondary roads, bus stops, and other public facilities where citizen damage is significant in case of accidents, and will conduct safety inspections jointly with Seoul City, autonomous districts, and external experts for five weeks from the 28th to July 30th.

As part of the demolition improvement measures, Seoul City will focus on inspecting 11 items including mandatory residence of demolition design personnel, site agents, and supervisors, CCTV installation, and will intensively check for violations from preparation to demolition progress, such as the stability against overturning of demolition sites adjacent to roads?pointed out as the cause of the recent accident in Dong-gu, Gwangju?and whether the demolition is carried out according to the demolition plan.

The inspection team consists of the Seoul Regional Building Safety Center, autonomous district Building Safety Centers, external experts, and city and district inspection teams. If any hazards are found, construction will be immediately ordered to stop, and construction will resume only after safety measures are confirmed.

This emergency inspection is being conducted separately from the full inspection of autonomous districts that started on the 14th and the special inspection of 16 large-scale demolition sites in redevelopment and reconstruction areas conducted by Seoul City since the 21st.

Kim Seong-bo, head of the Housing and Architecture Headquarters of Seoul City, said, "The most important thing to prevent accidents at demolition sites is the safe demolition method carried out by the site manager and supervisor and compliance with safety regulations," adding, "Seoul City will continue to monitor the safe demolition of buildings and compliance with regulations."
