Yeongdeungpo District Mayor Cha Hyeon-il Meets Mayor Oh Se-hoon to Request Cooperation on Current Issues Including the Creation of 'Menakgol Park'

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] On the 21st, Cha Hyun-il, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo District, had a meeting with Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon to discuss local issues including the creation of Menakgol Park on the site of the Seoul Regional Military Manpower Administration and the establishment of a new subway station at Seonyu High School on the Mokdong Line.

Mayor Cha visited the Seoul Mayor’s office in the morning to have an in-depth discussion on joint projects between Seoul City and Yeongdeungpo District, expressing his desire for their prompt implementation.

The Military Manpower Administration site at 13, Yeouidaebang-ro 43-gil, Yeongdeungpo-gu, was designated as a park facility in 1940, but has been occupied by the Navy (1960?1993) and the Military Manpower Administration (1994?present) for over 80 years. As a result, the designation as an urban planning facility was nullified last July due to the long-term non-execution of the park creation plan.

Anticipating the nullification of the park designation, the district newly designated the Military Manpower Administration site as a district unit planning zone in June last year, devising management plans linked to public development projects such as the construction of a new Military Manpower Administration building, and conducted a public review of the draft plan in April this year.

During the review process, residents voiced their opinions demanding the full creation of the park and its swift progress. In response, the district formed the ‘Menakgol Park Creation Promotion Council,’ where residents directly participate to review progress. Through meetings with the head of the Seoul Regional Military Manpower Administration, they agreed to maintain close communication to create a park that satisfies residents, the district, and the Military Manpower Administration alike.

Mayor Cha conveyed the residents’ strong desire for the creation of Menakgol Park in detail during his meeting with Mayor Oh and discussed future cooperation plans.

They also discussed the establishment of a new subway station at Seonyu High School intersection on the Mokdong Line.

Mayor Cha emphasized, “It is unreasonable that the Mokdong Line light rail, which connects Sinwol Station in Yangcheon-gu to Dangsan Station in Yeongdeungpo-gu, will have only one station in Yeongdeungpo District. The area near Seonyu High School is densely populated with four elementary, middle, and high schools, large apartment complexes, and small shops, resulting in a high floating population. However, public transportation such as subways and buses is relatively inconvenient, so establishing a Mokdong Line station is essential to improve residents’ convenience and the transportation environment.”

Additionally, he requested the prompt advancement and active cooperation on other joint projects with Seoul City, including the rapid promotion of the Yeouido old apartment reconstruction and maintenance project, early demolition of Seonyu Overpass, introduction of economic and job strategy facilities and community facilities for residents on the site of the relocated Southern Road Office, and early commencement of the 2nd Sejong Cultural Center.

Mayor Oh, after listening to the district’s local projects, expressed agreement with Mayor Cha’s explanations and proposals and stated his intention to actively review and cooperate for regional development.

Mayor Cha Hyun-il of Yeongdeungpo District said, “During the meeting with Mayor Oh, I clearly conveyed our district’s key projects and requests regarding local issues and expressed the need for cooperation. We will do our best to smoothly resolve major issues such as the creation of Menakgol Park and the establishment of the Mokdong Line station through close cooperation with Seoul City, so that Yeongdeungpo can regain its status as the head family of the southwestern region.”
